Radio Greeneville News reported a large fire at the Greeneville/Greene County Landfill Saturday morning.
According to Greeneville Fire Chief, Alan Shipley, the fire was noticed around 7:30 Saturday morning. A caller reported smoke coming from the landfill, and later flames were confirmed as visible, as well. The first engine on the scene, Newmansville, requested mutual aid from Tusculum Volunteer Fire Department to assist with water supply. Additional departments were requested to help set up a water shuttle, including Limestone, Mosheim, and Debusk.
Public Works was requested to bring in heavy equipment operators to separate the debris of the landfill, while firefighters utilized a master stream to extinguish the fire.
Firefighters battled blaze most of the day. The fire scene at the landfill was cleared by about 3:30 Saturday afternoon. They used 3 hydrants, with Moon creek to the Morgan Road tunnel identified, but not needed for back up.
600 gallons of water per minute were used while fighting the blaze.
