The Greene County Commission agreed to waive building permit for those who will have to rebuild or repair their homes that were damaged by Hurricane Helene‘s floods.
The original resolution called for a 90 day period in which the county would waive those fees. Commissioner Lyle Parton amended the resolution to extend it to one year. Building inspector Tim Tweed pointed out that it was not expected to be a significant loss of revenue for the county to waive those fees. 60 homes were destroyed by the floods, with another 60 sustaining major damage. Total losses to homes and structures is estimated at over $24 million.
County building and permit fees are assessed based on the amount of the cost of the project. The county was looking for a way to ease the financial burden of repair and rebuilding on those who suffered catastrophic losses due to the flood.
