The Greeneville Town Council gave official approval for the purchase of a wood chipper for the Greeneville/Greene County Landfill at their meeting Tuesday.
Initial approval was given at a called meeting last week, but the board finalized the requirements from the State Comptroller’s office with their action Tuesday. The chipper, estimated to cost $1.4 million, will be used to help deal with the enormous amount of wood and debris from the winds and floods from Tropical Storm Helene.
City Manager Todd Smith told the board that Greene County Mayor Kevin Morrison had verbally agreed for Greene County to fund their portion of the cost. The landfill is a joint venture between the two governments, with each sharing in the expenses.
The Town Council also approved a North Carolina company, WitherRavenel, to conduct a road and asphalt condition study in Greeneville. Scott Keith, assistant director of Public Works, told the board that the study helps determine the condition of city streets, and helps the department decide which areas need resurfacing and restoration. Keith said the study can help the town be more cost effective and extend road life.
