A Greeneville woman reportedly sent $150,000 in cashier’s checks in a sweepstakes scam.
The Mt. Pleasant Circle woman was contacted Monday and told she won $2.5 million dollars in a sweepstakes. The scammer said the victim needed to send money to an address in Florida in order to receive her check. That day, the victim sent $100,000 in a cashier’s check. She was then contacted again to send another $25,000 and sent a second cashier’s check.
On Thursday, the victim was contacted and told to send another $25,000. She went to the UPS store to send the check, but was told she was being scammed. After refusing to send the check, the store contacted the victim’s family to inform them of the situation. However, the victim had already sent the third check through FedEx.
No further information was provided in the report filed with the Greene County Sheriff’s Department.
