The Greene County Commission held its monthly meeting Monday evening at the Greene County Courthouse.
A resolution to add a section of the Old Erwin Highway to the official Greene County road list was pulled to allow the Highway Committee to hold another meeting and discuss more information that came to light. The commission approved the sale of a surplus 1993 Chevrolet van that had been used by the Maintenance Department.
Commissioners voted 19-1 to approve a resolution that would call upon those who are inclined to join a 16-day season of prayer and intermittent fasting in order to seek blessing and transform the community. Commissioner Paul Burkey was the lone no vote, stating that while there was nothing in the resolution that he would not be happy to declare as a private citizen, he was concerned that the resolution skirted close to the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution.
At the start of the meeting, Greene County Mayor Kevin Morrison issued recognition to several members of the Sheriff’s Department. Deputy Brian Hiatt was honored for reviving a child who had drowned in a swimming pool in June, while K-9 Ruger and his handler, Wayne Wilhoit, were saluted for locating a murder victim who had been buried on a 17-acre property in Carter County in May. Deputy Sarah Brown was also noted for assisting a choking victim at a restaurant last month.
