The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of a new scam that appears to be targeting property owners who bought or transferred land in 2022.
The scam is using official looking notices from the Clerk’s Property Office, which does not exist. The recipient of the letter is asked to send $89 for a copy of their recorded deed. Those who reported receiving the letters all purchased their home or bought land in 2022.
Legitimate copies of deeds in Washington County can be obtained through the Register of Deeds Office, which is located inside the Historic Courthouse on Main Street in Jonesborough.
