A Greeneville man fell victim to a warrant scam on Monday, according to police.
The victim said that he received a call from a lieutenant with the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office, who told the man that he had a warrant for failure to appear. The victim was told he could either turn himself in or pay $9,000.
The man withdrew $5,000 from the bank and had $4,000 cash, which he turned into Bitcoin and sent to the caller before realizing it was a scam.
The public is once again advised that law enforcement will never call anyone in regard to outstanding warrants, and will never ask for any kind of payments over the phone. Anyone who receives such a call should hang up immediately and notify local authorities.
