Some relief from ongoing dry conditions is possible into the evening hours tonight, according to the National Weather Service.
Showers and thunderstorms could become strong to marginally severe this afternoon, with damaging wind gusts the primary threat. Some areas could see rainfall amounts between a half and three-quarters of an inch late this afternoon, with up to an additional half-inch this evening.
All of upper East Tennessee has been classified as abnormally dry by the U.S. Drought Monitor, with parts of northeastern Greene County, northern Washington County, eastern Hawkins County and western Sullivan County in moderate drought status.
Greene County was more than two inches below normal in rainfall for the month of June, according to the National Weather Service. Most of the 1.95 inches of rain received last month fell on June 9 and 10, when 1.1 inches was recorded.
