Free Fishing Day is this Saturday on June 8th and people of all ages can fish free all across Tennessee without a license. Plus, youth ages 15 and under can fish free all week from June 8-14, 2024.
According to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, because of funding by license sales they have been able to stock fish, work on conservation, and manage waterways so all Tennesseans can enjoy this event. You can renew your license by visiting gooutdoorstennessee.com.
Free Fishing Day was inspired and named in honor of Bobby Wilson who retired in 2022 after more than 40 years of service to the TWRA. He served in the Fisheries Division for 35 years, before being named TWRA Deputy Director in 2015 and Executive Director in 2020.
Every year since 1991 the agency has provided free fishing opportunities in hopes that more children and families will be introduced to fishing and outdoor recreation. Each year, several thousand pounds of fish are stocked across the state to ensure high-quality and fishing for participants.
According to TWRA, Bobby Wilson Free Fishing Day and Free Fishing Week applies to Tennessee’s public waters, TWRA owned and operated lakes, and state park facilities. Some privately owned pay lakes continue to charge during this special day and week. Anglers will need to consult with those operators if there are any questions about a facility.
