George A. Frye was nominated to fill the vacant seat on the Greene County School Board and will serve the unexpired term, replacing Tom Cobble, who resigned in April.
Following Cobble’s resignation was an investigation due to allegations against him. He plead guilty on May 1st to an official misconduct charge for reportedly making offensive remarks in January of this year toward foreign exchange students and because of behavior that exceeded his power and position as a public servant. Because of the guilty plea he is unable to hold office, vote, or carry a firearm, and he is on probation for one year.
George A. Frye will now represent the 2nd District and will serve until August 31st, but there will also be a caucus held in June by the Greene County Republican Party. Frye has spent 41 years teaching in various positions from principal to coach. He was elected by the Greene County Commission during their meeting Monday evening. He said he and his family have attended Greene County Schools and that he has experience with issues Greene County is facing, including dealing with a budget.
Safety will be his number one priority and he said he is invested in his students and serving the county. Frye got the majority of votes from commissioners. There were two rounds of votes. Robert L. Starnes was in second with the most votes in both rounds. Frye and Starnes were two out of the six people that were nominated for the vacant seat. Four other candidates did not qualify, including a student from Chuckey Doak High School, according to Greene County Mayor Kevin Morrison.
