GREENEVILLE, Tenn. — Tusculum University will send three members of its track & field team to the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championship, which will be held May 23-25 in Emporia, Kansas.
Sophomore Daryl Smith Jr. will compete in the men’s triple jump, while sophomore Theresa Green-White will run in the women’s 100 hurdles and freshman Caley Sosnowski will throw in the women’s javelin.
All three will be making their NCAA Outdoor Championship debut, though Smith placed 16th in the triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Championship in March. This is the first time in the program’s seven-year history that the Pioneers have sent three individuals to nationals in the same year, and the first time that Tusculum has had two women’s entries.
Smith is tied for 17th in the field of 19 triple jumpers with a season-best mark of 15.10 meters (49 feet, 6 1/2 inches) set at the Blue Bear Invite on March 30. The Rockledge, Florida native took second in the triple jump at the South Atlantic Conference Championship with a mark of 15.03 meters (49 feet, 3 3/4 inches) and had one win and three second-place finishes in six meets.
Green-White is seeded ninth in the 100 hurdles, earning her spot in the field of 20 at the Lee Last Chance Meet on May 11 with a school-record time of 13.67 seconds. The native of Stafford, Texas was second in the 100 hurdles in the SAC Championship at 13.92 seconds, and had five victories and two runner-up finishes in the event in seven meets this spring.
Sosnowski sat atop the NCAA Division II rankings in the javelin for much of the season, including a throw of 49.05 meters (160 feet, 11 inches) at the SAC Championship. She was later tied for the top seed in the field of 21 throwers by Keilee Johnson of Missouri Southern on May 11. The Oxford, Florida native enjoyed a dominant season in which she was undefeated against collegiate competition, with six victories in all.
Green-White will be first to compete for the Pioneers at nationals, with trials in the 100 hurdles set for 7:50 p.m. on Friday, May 24. Smith will be in the triple jump on Saturday, May 25 at 1:45 p.m. and Sosnowski will follow in the javelin at 2:30 p.m. Finals in the women’s 100 hurdles are 3:55 p.m. on May 25. All times listed are Eastern.
Tusculum has had two outdoor All-Americans in program history, with Widchard Guervil earning the honors in the men’s 100 meters in 2018 and Nicole McMillen in the women’s steeplechase in 2019. The trio of Smith, Green-White and Sosnowski increases the number of competitors in an individual event from Tusculum at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championship to nine.
