An update has been provided on the Greene Mountain fire, which is still about 80% contained as of yesterday due to the extremely rough, rocky, and hazardous terrain. James B. Heaton, Forest Service Public Information Officer with the Cherokee National Forest, spoke with the Greene Mountain Fire Incident Commander Monday. Heaton said the fire has not had any new growth since Friday.
Members of the Midewin Interagency Hotshot Crew have continued to remain on the scene and were working throughout the day on Monday to extinguish any hotspots encountered. Heaton says this will most likely continue until we receive adequate rainfall. Although there is rain in the forecast it may also bring strong winds, so crews must continue to patrol, monitor, and reinforce fire lines.
Heaton also stated there have been many calls regarding the fire in Hawkins County and said that the Tennessee Division of Forestry is managing that fire. Information may be obtained by contacting Nathan Waters at 868-776-2111 or by email at [email protected].
