A former Baileyton man was killed in a single-vehicle accident Wednesday morning on Interstate 81 in Hamblen County.
The wreck occurred around 8:30 AM in the southbound lanes at mile marker 12 when a Ford F250 driven by 41-year-old Cody Hawn had a front tire blow. Hawn then lost control and the truck ran off the left side of the roadway. The truck struck an embankment, went air-born, rolled onto its top, and traveled down the other side of the embankment. The vehicle came to a final rest on its top in the median off the left shoulder in the northbound lanes of Interstate 81.
Hawn was transported to UT Medical Center for his injuries. A passenger, 42-year-old John Cooter, was killed in the crash.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Cooter was wearing a seat belt and Hawn was not.
