One person died and two Mosheim Police Department officers were injured after an incident early Sunday morning that resulted in two crashes. The accidents happened around 12:45 AM.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol says that 22 year old Tanner Horn was killed when he was ejected from a car driven by 30 year old Robert Knight. The THP says that Knight was attempting to flee officers of the Mosheim Police Department when his car left the roadway and ran into a ditch and began to roll over. Horn, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle and was thrown into a parked vehicle. Knight’s vehicle had reportedly reached speeds over 100 miles per hour. Horn was pronounced dead at the scene. Knight was flown to the Johnson City Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. Charges are pending against Knight.
Mosheim Police Chief Dustin Jeffers said that his department was dispatched to the report of a vehicle committing multiple traffic violations in the 15000 block of West Andrew Johnson Highway. The driver was reportedly committing multiple violations, passing vehicles across the double-yellow line, and travelling at high rates of speed, and was possibly operated by an impaired driver. Jeffers said that Mosheim officers rounded a curve in the 16000 block of West Andrew Johnson Highway near the Oasis Road intersection when they came upon the crash. To avoid striking the crashed car, the officer’s vehicle left the roadway and overturned. Both officers involved in that crash were taken to the Johnson City Medical Center where they were treated for their injuries and released.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating.
