A Mosheim man reported to the Greene County Sheriff’s Department this week that he discovered fraudulent charges were made after paying his electric bill.
The Oak Hills Road man said he had around $2,300 taken out of his two bank accounts. The victim pays his electric bill via a phone call. He discovered after he pays his bill, an extra amount between $40 and $100 would come out via an E-Bill online payment. The victim went to Greeneville Energy Authority to inquire about the charges and found that an email has been attached online to his account for the the E-Bill since July 2021. The name associated with the email belonged to a former girlfriend of the victim.
Greeneville Energy Authority helped the victim stop further issues as of now. According to the report, the victim cannot get repaid by his banks and is out $2,330.
