School safety has been a priority and always a concern in Greeneville City Schools, especially with school shootings around the world and unforeseen circumstances.
According to EdWeek.org, there have been 183 shootings since 2018, including 37 school shootings with injuries or deaths last year.
As of last week, Assistant Director for Administration Beverly Miller says it would cost about $2M to address all the safety needs at GCS. During the Greeneville City Schools Legislative Breakfast on Friday, Miller said safety continues to be a matter that has to be invested in. She said public education is the largest target in cyber attacks and the needs are great. Fencing and gates are items that Miller feels will be needed in the future.
Historically, the normal allocation was around $60,00 but the previous year GCS reportedly received at least $118,000 in non-recurring school safety funding. Greeneville City Schools ask for the Tennessee General Assembly, the Senate Education Committee, and the House of Education Committee to commit to ongoing and sustained funding for safety programs, projects, and mitigation of threats.
