A hunter stranded on an island on the Nolichuckey River was rescued by volunteers with the Greeneville Emergency & Rescue Squad last night.
Incoming Captain Cody Trammell said that the man had crossed the river near the old Brown’s Bridge by tractor early on Tuesday. Recent rains caused the river to rise after he crossed.
The National Weather Service shows the waters rising about three feet during the early afternoon.
When the man finished hunting and attempted to drive his tractor back across the river, he found that the higher water made it impossible. He returned to the island and called 9-1-1 around 6 pm.
Trammell said that four squad members along with the TWRA and Sheriff’s Department responded. A squad boat was launched and taken to the island where the stranded hunter was brought back to safety around 7 pm.
