The Greeneville City Council met Tuesday afternoon and a motion was made to table the decision to select a design for the Depot Street sidewalk.
The council has discussed design options for several months now since the slope in the sidewalk was discovered and raised concerns regarding safety for pedestrians as there is no area distinguishing where the sidewalk ends. Council member Tim Ward shared during the meeting three people fell on Friday and feels this is definitely an issue and has to be addressed.
A Casualty Loss Control Survey was conducted in November and Public Entity Partners recommend the issue should be addressed before the sidewalk is reopened to the public. Design options discussed included a 12-inch tabletop with a backrest seat type style. The cost for the sidewalk design would be $58,632 but doesn’t include installation. The next step is to get a quote for the total cost.
According to City Manager Todd Smith, the tables would span about 9 feet along areas on Depot Street. It would be placed within the same sections where the slopes are to alleviate safety issues and instead provide seating options. Smith is also to reach out to the company that did the work on Depot Street and discuss mitigation costs.
