An incident in which a man was shot in the back Monday on Benbow Road is under investigation.
A deputy with the Greene County Sheriff’s Department responded to a medical call around 6:15 PM at the Greeneville Fire Department station on West Summer Street after someone had arrived who had been shot and needed medical assistance.
The victim, who was being treated by EMS, said he and his girlfriend were at an address in the 600 block of Old Knoxville Highway and left on foot traveling up Benbow Road. The two then stopped and went exploring into the woods. They saw a pile of tires and began checking to see if any were salvageable. The victim felt something hit his back, heard a gunshot, and then realized he was bleeding.
The two then got a ride from a friend, who started to go to the hospital, but then pulled into the fire station due to thinking care could be provided sooner there.
Deputies checked the residence and parts of the property on Old Knoxville Highway and Benbow Road. No evidence or signs of a shooting were found.
While investigating on Old Knoxville Highway, deputies came upon an abandoned mobile home with both the front and rear doors open. A man identified as Dareyl Kelkites was found in a blanket. He was discovered to have an active failure to appear warrant and was taken into custody. He was not charged in connection with the shooting incident.
The victim was transported to the hospital. The incident remains under investigation.
