A hit-and-run incident was reported yesterday near the site of an accident on Interstate-81.
The Mosheim Police Department responded to a wreck near Exit 23 in the southbound lanes around 1:00 PM. According to Police Chief Dustin Jeffers, a road rage incident occurred not far from the wreck site while officers were on the scene.
Vehicle 1 and Vehicle 2 were traveling in a row when Vehicle 1 Collided with Vehicle 2 in a front-to-rear collision.
Both vehicles came to a controlled rest on the shoulder of the interstate.
The driver of Vehicle 1, identified as 29-year-old David Davis, was reportedly trying to drive off from the scene as the driver and passenger of Vehicle 2 were getting out of the car and trying to stop him.
Davis allegedly opened the driver’s side door, pushing the driver of vehicle 2 to the ground, injuring him as he fell onto the roadway.
Davis then drove forward and collided with Vehicle 2 a second time, and drove off. He was located at the Pilot Travel Center in Jefferson County and charged with Vehicular Assault, DUI, and Leaving the scene of an accident.
He was transported to the Greene County Detention Center without further incident.
The driver of vehicle 2 was reportedly flown from the scene to the Johnson City Medical Center with serious injuries.
Traffic was backed up significantly in the area as crews responded to both scenes.
