The Greeneville Flyboys won in a close game against the Kingsport Axmen on Thursday night, 5-4.
The Flyboys (10-11) scored a run in the seventh inning to go ahead by one and held on in the final two innings against the Axmen (9-12).
The Axmen scored a second inning run on a Payton Allen RBI single. The Flyboys answered with an RBI single from Ray Ortiz, which scored Wallace Clark in the bottom of the inning.
The Flyboys scored one in the third and two in the fifth to go ahead 4-1. First baseman Joel Dragoo picked up two of the three RBIs in the sequence. After Colby Backus’s six RBI game against the Otterbots, Dragoo is now second in the league in RBIs with 22 of them.
The Axmen picked up two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to tie the game at 4-4.
On the mound, Ethan Phillips became the second Flyboy’s starter to strike out nine batters. He was also the first to pitch six innings this year. He allowed three hits, three runs, and two earned runs.
Shawn Scott (2-0) pitched the seventh and eighth innings for Greeneville. Scott walked four, struck out four and gave up one run. He was put in line for the win when Gavyn Boyle picked up a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to give Greeneville a 5-4 lead. Boyle had two RBIs in the game.
Cameron O’Banan (1) pitched the ninth inning for Greeneville, struck out two, and picked up the save. The Flyboys are now 2-1 against Kingsport this season.
