The Greeneville City Council meets this afternoon and will hold a public hearing and have a final reading to approve a $0.28 property tax rate increase for city property owners.
The tax increase was approved by the council for the Fiscal Year 2024 Budget earlier in June on the first reading. This will be a 13% increase. If approved, property taxes will be $2.4575 per $100 of assessed value on all real and personal property. It includes $2.4 M for large capital projects with $200,000 going toward town hall repairs and maintenance projects.
It will also fund the purchase of the Jeff Woods Memorial Drive property for the possible site of a new Middle School, payment for the school system HVAC and energy efficiency projects, and over $1 M in salaries for town employees.
The last increase according to City Manager Todd Smith, was in 2016. He says this will help with staffing issues that departments have and will allow them to stay competitive. It also allows the town to keep the level of service that’s expected for Greeneville.
There will be a Water Study Presentation, consideration of a resolution authorizing the town to participate in the Safety Partners Matching Grant Program, and consideration for the Greeneville Police Department to apply for a grant with the U.S. Department of Justice, for a Bulletproof Vest Partnership totaling almost $11,000.
Furthermore, the council will consider an increase for municipal solid waste garbage fees for dumpster rentals and/or pick-up services beginning July 1, 2023. They will meet at 4 PM at Greeneville Energy Authority in the G. Thomas Love Boardroom.
