According to the Tennessee Public Utility Commission, residents in portions of East Tennessee that get a new phone number, could likely also have the new area code (729).
The new area code was proposed due to East Tennessee running out of new numbers and was approved on May 30th, 2023 by the Utility Commission. According to the department, the (423) area code is expected to run out of new numbers by sometime in 2025. Existing numbers will remain the same.
