Baseball:
As the signs outside the field read, “feels like ’18,” the Greeneville Greene Devils’ baseball team took a big step on Wednesday to advancing to their second state title game in school history as the Greene Devils would shut out Greenbrier 7-0 to advance to the state semifinals. Greeneville senior Parker Shipley would strike out 15 batters in a shutout performance. The Greene Devils also won on Tuesday over Brighton 4-2 and will rematch Brighton on Thursday.
Greeneville can advance to the championship game with a win tomorrow against Brighton and must be beaten twice to be eliminated on Thursday. Coverage of Greeneville baseball in the state semifinal game on 95.5 FM WSMG begins at 2:30 p.m. ET with the first pitch at 3:00 p.m. ET (2:00 p.m. CT).
Softball:
North Greene would run into two of the top teams in the state in the Class A Softball State Tournament and would fall on Tuesday to defending state champions Eagleville 10-0 leading to an elimination game today against Dresden. Dresden would jump up on the Lady Huskies early, but North Greene would battle back to tie the game and send it into extra innings.
With the ghost runner in effect in the 10th inning, Dresden would strike pushing home a run in the top of the 10th and the Lady Huskies would be unable to answer leading to a 6-5 loss, ending the North Greene softball season. North Greene finishes the softball season 21-6.
Soccer:
After heartbreak in recent years in Murfreesboro, the Greeneville soccer team would break through with a state semifinal victory over Martin Luther King by a score of 2-0. Greeneville flexed some muscle in the 6-0 victory over Millington in the quarterfinal win on Tuesday, but MLK would challenge the Greene Devils early and often, but great goal play by Tanner Myers would keep MLK off the board. The Greene Devils would strike for two in the second half behind the legs of Drew Shelton and Spencer Robinson to advance to the title game.
Greeneville will have Thursday off before playing in the Class AA State Championship on Friday against Valor College Prep at 5:00 p.m. ET (4:00 p.m. CT) in Murfreesboro with radio coverage on 95.5 FM WSMG.
