A woman from Jimmy Johnston Road was scammed for almost $2,000 over the phone Friday.
The victim spoke with deputies and said on May 18th she received a call from a man claiming to be Marvin Campbell, an employee with Amazon. She was informed her card was used to purchase $2,000 worth of computer parts to which she replied was fraudulent. She was transferred to a ‘Fraud Department’ where she spoke with a man claiming to be Chris Maloney. He was allegedly helping her get a refund and instructed her to purchase prepaid debit cards.
The report states the victim went to 3 different stores and got 4 prepaid cards as the suspect told her this would be a way to secure funds until she was able to cancel her bank account. The suspect asked the victim to provide details for all the cards that were bought so he could work directly with her bank and handle the fraudulent purchase. She did provide that information.
She woke up the next morning concerned she was scammed and checked the balance for her prepaid cards. All 4 cards were empty. She contacted the card company and was told she was unable to get any of her money back. She was referred to a Fraud Hotline with the Federal Bureau of Investigation by the Sheriff’s Department.
