The Greene County Sheriff’s Department is advising all again of scams that are continuing from callers claiming to be with the department.
Several concerned citizens went to the sheriff’s office yesterday after they received the call. The individual uses an employee of the department’s name, stating the victim has missed court. The caller I.D. will show that it’s the Greene County Sheriff’s Department, it’s actually the scammers who have found ways of disguising their numbers. The scams have been ongoing since last year.
Chief Deputy David Beverly advised Radio Greeneville that callers will insist money be sent to stop the agency from coming to their home and arresting them. But sheriff’s do not call and request money from people for bond. They strongly advise the public to be aware that scam artists always insist money be sent by money order or through cards.
The department also wants to remind all that the best thing to do is hang up on the caller and end the conversation. Do not fall for this tactic even if the phone number shows up on caller I.D. as the sheriff’s department.
