The Greeneville Board of Mayor and Aldermen had a fairly short meeting but a room full of people yesterday afternoon waiting for the reception of retiring chief of Greeneville Police Tim Ward.
Chief Ward was close to tears after hearing many speak highly of him and thank him for his 33 years of service. Mayor Cal Doty read a letter from City Administrator Todd Smith who said the Chief started in September 1990 as a patrol officer and served in positions from Administrative Captain to Patrol Captain, Detective Lieutenant, SWAT and Special Response Team Commander, to a Narcotics Agent. He worked his way up the ranks and became Chief in 2018.
Alderman Scott Bullington shared stories going way back when Ward and he were kids and remembered Ward saying his goal was to leave Greeneville better place. When speaking to Radio Greeneville News, Ward mentioned Greene County Mayor asking him to stay close and remain on the Range Committee and Greene County 911 Board. So Ward plans on remaining involved in the community and is just honored to have been able to serve the citizens of Greeneville. He plans on retiring by the end of March.
Captain Steve Spano will serve as Interim Chief and according to City Administrator Todd Smith, the department will continue to look for a replacement to try and fill Ward’s position.
