The Greeneville City Board of Education voted to request that the state General Assembly amend the Third Grade Retention Law that would hold back students who score below proficient in English Language Arts on the TCAP test
The board will send the request to members of the House and Senate Education Committees along with the Tennessee School Boards Association and the Tennessee Organization of School Superintendents. State Representative David Hawk has introduced a bill that would give local school districts the right to decide if students should be promoted or retained.
The city board also authorized director of schools Steve Starnes to enter into a settlement agreement in the Juul e-cigarette class action lawsuit. The board also approved Phase 1 of the roof replacement at EastView Elementary School.
The Greeneville City Board of Education will next meet on Tuesday, February 28 at 5 p.m. at the Central Office.
