The Greene County Board of Education approved a plan that will move fifth-grade classes from Baileyton Elementary School to North Greene Middle School for the 2023-24 school year during its meeting Thursday night.
Beginning this fall, fifth-graders who would have attended Baileyton will instead go to North Greene Middle School in a move that will relieve crowding at Baileyton while utilizing available space at the Middle School. CDC students will remain at Baileyton, and the fifth-graders who move to the Middle School will be able to play booster ball at Baileyton.
The board agreed to review the arrangement each year, with the option of undoing the shift if enough classroom space reopens at Baileyton. In addition, the board suggested exploring the possibility of building a new elementary school to replace the current Baileyton school, which opened in 1939 and is the oldest school in the system.
The board also voted to authorize director of schools David McLain to enter into any settlement agreement related to litigation with e-cigarette manufacturer Juul. McLain said that he did not know the exact amount of money that would come to the school system from the agreement.
McLain’s contract was approved through January 2026 at an annual salary of $122,000 by the board, which will next meet on Thursday, February 23 at the central office.
