A Chuckey man was arrested early this morning after nearly striking two police vehicles.
A deputy with the Greene County Sheriff’s Department was on routine patrol around 2:30 AM when he was reportedly almost struck head-on by a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Fishpond Road. The deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver, identified as Matthew Norton of Fox Road, failed to stop. Norton allegedly ran multiple stop signs during the pursuit and reached speeds of approximately 95 miles per hour several times on Erwin Highway.
Norton then continued into Washington County. At one point, he initially went into the oncoming lane of travel in an apparent attempt to strike a Washington County deputy who was assisting in the pursuit. After the vehicle lost a tire, Norton attempted to keep traveling, but finally stopped.
Norton was discovered to have a revoked license. An open container of whisky was inside the vehicle, along with a glass pipe consistent with marijuana use. Norton was charged with felony evading arrest, reckless endangerment, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to exercise due care, violation of the open container law, and traffic control device violation.
