A Winter Storm Watch will be in effect for the mountains of Southeast Greene County from midnight tonight until about 7 AM Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Morristown heavy snow is expected with total snow accumulations of up to around 6 inches above 2,500 feet in elevation. Totals of over 1 foot are possible for the Mountains, with winds gusting as high as 35 mph. The valley locations will have a mix of rain and snow late Friday afternoon, with a possibility of snow showers Friday night.
Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning and evening commute Friday. The quick drop in temperatures may lead to freezing of any moisture on roads producing icy roadways.
A line of showers and thunderstorms is expected to move through the area between noon and 3:00 PM today. Some of these storms may be strong to severe with damaging wind gusts as the primary threat. There is also a possibility of hail up to a quarter size and a low risk of a brief tornado. The greatest concern is across the Plateau and southeast Tennessee.
Strong and gusty southerly winds are forecast across portions of the higher elevations and foothills of the East Tennessee mountains today. The rain showers will begin transitioning to snow showers late tonight especially across the terrain, and accumulating snowfall will begin over the higher elevations.
Rain will change to snow across the higher elevations late tonight, then in the lower elevations by Friday morning. Stay tuned to Radio Greeneville stations for the latest weather updates.
