The latest forecast from the National Weather Service has Greene County in line to receive the strongest wind gusts in East Tennessee. A Wind Advisory will be in effect from 11:00 tonight until 4:00 PM Friday. The latest models predict the county to see gusty winds of up to 45-50 mph in the valley and more in the higher elevations. That brings the potential for power outages and life threatening wind chill factors.
Chuck Bowlin, with Greeneville Light & Power, said crews will be ready to respond to any outages. Heather Sipe, Emergency Management Agency Director, said that warming shelters will be open and available by calling 638-4099.
A Winter Weather Advisory is still in effect from midnight until 7 PM tomorrow night. A Wind Chill Warning remains in effect for the county beginning at 4:00 AM Friday morning until 1:00 PM Saturday.
Rain will start around midnight with temperatures as low as 2. Dangerously cold wind chills of 10 to 20 below zero are expected for lower elevations, while wind chills as low as 25 to 40 below are possible in the higher elevations.
The total snow accumulations are up to two inches, with the majority of snow falling possibly before you even wake up. Plan on slippery road conditions that could impact travel throughout Friday due to the extreme cold that’s about to hit. Strong winds may result in downed trees and power lines. Saturday you may see some lingering snow flurries, but no significant accumulation is expected.
Most importantly stay home and off the roadways if you can. Slow down and use caution while traveling.
