The Greeneville Board of Mayor and Aldermen met yesterday afternoon and held a public hearing regarding an annexation request that was approved by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen in their December 6 meeting.
The resolution was approved yesterday to annex property into the town of Greeneville. The property is 250 acres and is near Baileyton Road, White House Road, and the Greeneville Municipal Airport. Planning Director Randy Davenport says currently he is not aware of what the property could potentially be, but it could possibly be a large residential development.
A public hearing was held regarding the annexation and some neighboring property owners attended to voice their opinions. Mr. Niswonger Shared he believes air space needs to be considered if planning to build on a property that’s near an airport.
Mr. Niswonger said there’s definitely going to be complaints from people in the future who move into the area. He said even though the airports been there for about 60 years, people still seem to have a noise complaint, and that won’t stop if more housing is developed as airplanes are in and out all day and all night.
Property owner Katherine Grossman said her and her husband moved into Greeneville five years ago under the impression that they would have their forever home, but feels she’s been encroached upon. There have been several additions since she’s moved into Greeneville including Dollar General and Planet Fitness. Grossman said there’s so many planes flying over her home and can’t even garden in peace, constantly feeling like she has to duck and cover.
Davenport added Greeneville is constantly growing and looking at the future is necessary when considering development. City Administrator Todd Smith agreed and added the growth in town should to be considered as well as looking into the future 10 years from now, how is that growth going to affect police, schools, and fire departments who are already low staffed. At least with this property being annexed into the town of Greeneville, he says there will be more control in regards to future plans.
