A telephone scan saying they are with the Greene County Sheriff’s Department has been reported on today.
Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy David Beverly said that several people have reported receiving a phone call where the caller states they are a representative of the Sheriff’s Department and need to speak to the recipient about an important legal matter. The scam calls use a method called “spoofing”, which is when a caller deliberately falsifies the Caller ID display to disguise their identity. Beverly said that the scammers are making the Sheriff’s Department phone number display on citizens’ phones, and that they are actually using the name of an employee with the Sheriff’s Department. The caller has identified himself as Sergeant or Detective Brett Garland. The scammer then gives a phone number asking you to call this number back.
Beverly said that the Greene County Sheriff’s Department is not making these calls, and urged the public not to give out any private information to an unknown caller.
