Two rivals with a combined record of 24-0 clash in the Class 4A State Quarterfinal tonight as the Greeneville Greene Devils travel to Anderson County two games away from a return to the High School State Football Championship.
Greeneville (12-0) has looked outstanding this season, but especially in the postseason outscoring their first two playoff opponents 101-34 against Fulton and Gibbs. Now, for the first time since October 13, the Greene Devils will hit the road for a matchup with Anderson County (12-0), who is coming off wins this postseason over Seymour and Elizabethton.
The Mavericks and Greene Devils have built a nice rivalry in recent years due to their meetings in November as this will be their fifth meeting in the playoffs since 2017, but the rivalry has been one-sided. Greeneville has eliminated Anderson County all four times they’ve clashed in the playoffs including in Anderson County in 2017 and three times inside Burley Stadium.
Overall, since 2006, Greeneville has won seven in a row against the Mavericks by an average margin of 19 points. With both teams playing so well, that margin will likely be much closer tonight.
Anderson County hasn’t been held under 30 points in any of their 12 games this season averaging 43.5 points per game this season, but the Greeneville defense has been stingy this season only allowing opponents an average of 8.5 points per game this season. Something will have to give in a battle to keep the season alive tonight as the winner will advance to the State Semifinals while the losing team will see their season come to a close.
