The Greeneville Board of Mayor and Aldermen discussed during its meeting on Tuesday holding a special called meeting in September, along with a public hearing, on proposed changes to the town’s charter.
City Administrator Todd Smith gave a timeline of the board holding a meeting in November to formally vote on the charter changes, which will then be sent to the state legislature for approval.
The proposed changes to be discussed include moving Ward 2 and mayoral elections to the same year as U.S. presidential elections, moving Ward 1 elections to even-year non-presidential-election years, and other town elections moved to be held only during even years. Another proposed change is to move the town away from ward elections entirely and instead have at-large elections. Other changes include removing the prohibition against a sitting alderman running for mayor and allowing a sitting alderman to run for alderman and mayor at the same time. The board will also discuss amending the town’s borrowing limit of 5 percent of total assessed property value.
Also during the meeting, the board approved the reappointments of Kent Bewley, Sam Miller, Watson Leonard, Rodney Bell, Tommy Burns, Bill Hickerson and Brandon Hull to the Health and Education Facilities Board.
The 2022 Marketing Plan for the town was tabled for further review and will be brought back before the board in August.
