Some of the troops of the 101st Airborne Division that have been stationed at the Greeneville Municipal Airport moved out on Tuesday, with others to follow in the coming days.
Greene County Mayor Kevin Morrison requested the assistance of the Division, and Greeneville’s airport served as a good location for staging equipment and personnel to be deployed all around the area. With the loss of infrastructure in some parts of North Carolina, Greeneville was close enough and large enough to accommodate the deployment.
One of the groups that was set to move out on Tuesday took time to meet with Greene County Mayor Kevin Morrison, EMA Director Heather Sipe, EMA Operations Officer Letitia Ricker, and Greeneville businessman and philanthropist Scott Niswonger at the airport before moving to another assignment. Morristown presented the unit with a Greene County flag and the thanks of Greene Countians for their assistance.
Around 20 Black Hawk helicopters and nearly a dozen Chinook helicopters have been in and out of the Greeneville airport for the last several days. They have been airlifting in supplies, materials, and vehicles into areas that were cut off by the flooding.
